Sarasota County delays restoration of spoil islands

SARASOTA COUNTY - After running into a "buzzsaw" of opposition from Siesta Key residents, Sarasota County commissioners voted today to reshuffle plans for restoring spoil islands.

Designing restoration plans for Little and Big Edwards islands and Skier's Island was scheduled to take place this year as part of the county's economic stimulus plan.

Instead, the projects will probably have to wait several years.

Residents expressed concerns over the appearance of the islands if they were to be denuded of Australian pines, as called for in the county's plan. The plan calls for planting thousands of mangroves to improve water quality in Roberts Bay.
