How to Help

If you want to preserve your Australian pines, you must persuade those who would eradicate them that Australian pines benefit the environment and all its inhabitants:

  1. identify policymakers on a local, regional, and state basis
  2. obtain the e-mail addresses of these policymakers
  3. gather the names and e-mail addresses of all the pine supporters you know, and ask them for referrals to other pine supporters
  4. motivate pine supporters to send e-mails to policymakers in order to  express their concerns over losing high canopy trees that:
    1. impede global warming by consuming carbon dioxide, producing oxygen, and helping cool our planet
    2. provide habitat for native birds and other wildlife
    3. provide welcome shade in our hot, sunny environment
    4. serve as major landscaping elements
    5. make attractive trees when they’re properly maintained
  5. propose that policymakers manage rather than eradicate Australian pines by keeping them pruned/topped
  6. write letters to the editors of local/regional publications, expressing your support for Australian pines, encouraging other pine supporters to contact relevant policymakers, and supplying e-mail addresses for relevant policymakers
  7. buy ads supporting Australian pines in local/regional publications if necessary (click on Australian pine display ads Ad 1 | Ad 2 | Ad 3)
  8. encourage pine supporters to attend/make themselves noticed/heard at meetings where Australian pine policy will be discussed/decided
  9. make policymakers aware that communities throughout Florida are taking measures to preserve and, in some cases, replant their Australian pines (click on “In the News”) (click on www.saveourpines.com for more information / ammunition to use with policymakers)
  10. go to our (downloadable) Australian pines pamphlet for arguments to convince policymakers to preserve, rather than destroy, pines
  11. go to the City of Sanibel Australian Pines Ordinance for language that protects pines on private property
  12. register as a pine supporter with friendsofthepines@msn.com in order to receive “call to action” e-mails
